Flowers have been and still are the most suitable and adequate decorative elements for a wedding cake. Things have changed since the antique eras when the wedding cakes were adorned and embellished with porcelain or artificial flowers, and nowadays more and more types of flowers seem to be incorporated in the wedding cake, in different formats, shapes, colors, designs and patterns.

Not only those natural and fresh flowers are used to decorate a wedding cake, but also edible flowers figurines and confections. These edible wedding flowers that are meant to beautify the wedding cakes are findable in almost any bakery that provide with pre-made edible decorative items and accessories for the wedding cake.

You can buy them yourself, considering the final aspect that you want to give to the wedding cake and decorate the cake at home, with your own hands. You don’t need extra skills, aptitudes or an official guidance when it comes to edible flowers, because they can be arranged very simple and inserted directly into the wedding cake.

Compared to the usage of real flowers to decorate the wedding cake, the edible confections are never poisoning, toxic or born with the capacity oh harming anyone eating them. On the other hand, some types of natural flowers that we know are not adequate for decorating a wedding cake because they might affect the texture and the taste of the cake. That is why they need to be inserted indirectly into the layers, with extra care and attentions and some special plastic holders that can sustain the stems of the flowers.

It would be better though to ask someone who really knows how to handle a wedding cake and its decoration with fresh flowers. If you decide to follow the popular method of “do it yourself” wedding cake decoration with real flowers, make sure that you read all the necessary instructions before you start decorating the cake. Among the most renowned types of toxic wedding flowers that can harm your wedding guests (creating allergies, rashes or irritations) are calla lilies, hydrangeas, hyacinths, tulips, carnations (pink), lilies of the valley, bird or paradise, jasmines, arum lilies or snowdrops.

If you fancy these types of flowers and you still want to use them to decorate the wedding cake, make sure that they don’t touch the wedding cake under no circumstance. Use plastic stem holder to prevent a drama or something like that. As for the real non-toxic wedding flowers that you can use to ornate a wedding cake are roses, orchids, tiger lilies, petunias or daises. You can place the flowers on each tier of the cake and follow a polka dot pattern, or a scroll design, or you can place the in curved or spiral cascading drapes. Another way to use flowers to decorate the wedding cake is to gather a bunch of flowers, like a bouquet and place them on top of the cake.
